Home Football Game, 8 th Grade Marching Band Night, THIS
Friday,
September 18: Most juniors and seniors will be
paired up with an 8
th grader. Please make them feel
welcome as they come on our campus
and experience a high school
football game. Help them have a great
first experience
with the marching band program at GHHS! It is our
goal to
recruit them into our program next year. Be sure to tell
them how rewarding and fun it is, but don’t forget to include how much
of a commitment that it is as well.
As a reminder, here is our
schedule:
3:15 Leadership Meeting (this can be changed to
another point in the
week)
4:00 Meet-and-greet,
rehearsal
5:30 Dinner
6:00 Dress
6:45
Warm-up
7:20 Pregame show
~8:30
Halftime
~10:00 Game ends, students are dismissed as a group to
change
Be sure to remember your committee responsibilities (revised
committee
lists have been posted) before you leave
campus.
Panther Creek Competition, September 26: This was the
schedule for
the Panther Creek competition last year.
Although we haven’t yet
received the official schedule, I am expecting
it to be similar.
*Note that students will need transportation to GH for
practice, and
to Panther Creek at 5pm.
12-3pm Rehearse at
GHHS--Students should eat lunch before they come.
Rehearsal will be on
stadium field unless there is heavy rain on days
preceding. Students
will need transportation from GHHS at 3pm and to
Panther Creek HS at
5pm.
5pm Meet at Panther Creek HS (an exact meeting place on their
campus
will be announced later). Students should carpool if possible
due to
limited parking. Students should eat something substantial
before
arriving, as we will not have time for another full meal until
after
our performance (snacks will be available, and students may have
a
little time to visit concessions for a snack). We will watch 5
bands
in the stadium.
7pm Dress, warm-up
9pm Performance. We are
the last band to perform before Panther Creek
performs in exhibition.
We will move to the end zone (in uniform) for
the exhibition
performance and awards. Students will be dismissed from
PCHS after
they dress out of uniform after awards (approximately
10:30pm). We
will need members from the percussion section and the
leadership team
to go back to GHHS to help unload the truck.
Because this is such a close
competition, we are hoping to "Paint the
stadium Maroon and Green"
with Green Hope parents and supporters.
Please come out and
watch!
Wakefield Competition, October 3: Please note that the
schedule
below is tentative.
*Note the items in red have
changed. Students will now need to bring
a bag
lunch.
8:00 Rehearsal in Stadium
10:00 Load truck, dress
into uniform , meet in band room (Students
should NOT leave
campus)
10:45 Depart GHHS
*Bag lunch on bus (bring your own
lunch)
11:20 Move to stadium to watch Cary HS perform (in
uniform)
11:45 Move to warm-up
1:00 Prelims
Performance
*After our performance, snacks will be available.
5:00
Prelim awards
*Dinner (provided)
*If we make it into Finals, the finals
performances will begin at
8:00pm. Our schedule for the rest of
the evening will depend on our
placement in the schedule. If we
do not make it into finals, we will
still stay to watch the finals
performances.
10:30 Finals Awards
~12:30 Return to GHHS,
unload truck
Havelock Competition, October 31: This will be
an extremely long
day, since it is our farthest competition during the
regular season.
We will most likely not practice on
Saturday before leaving, and we
won’t be able to practice on the
Thursday prior to the competition
because of the Fall
concert. Thus, we will practice on Friday,
October 30
before the football game (Senior Night) that night. This
is also
a teacher workday. Here is the preliminary schedule:
Friday,
October 30 (Senior Night)
11-1 Activity—this is a
fun, but optional, activity (stay tuned)
2-5
Practice
5:00 Dinner
6:00
Dress
~6:45 Seniors move to stadium, band warms
up
~7:20 Pre-game show begins (seniors join band on
field)
Competitions: Students may take the SAT on October
10 ( West
Johnston competition). We had originally scheduled an
overnight
competition that weekend but changed it when the SAT dates
were
released. The West Johnston schedule will probably be
similar to the
Panther Creek schedule, while the Sanderson schedule
will probably be
similar to the Wakefield schedule. Final
schedules will be
distributed as soon as I receive the schedule from
the site host.
Please be sure that you have reserved the entire day on
your personal
calendar for competitions. Don't assume that we
will report after a
certain time, or that we will dismiss by a certain
time. Often, we
are not given the schedule for competitions
until within two weeks
before the competition. I will distribute
the competition schedule as
soon as possible, but often it is not
until the Broadcast on the
Sunday before a Saturday competition.
Thank you for your
understanding of this matter. Most
competition days will begin with a
rehearsal before going to the
competition site. Buses will transport
the entire band to
competition sites, except Panther Creek.
Bus Policy: Students
are required to ride the bus to competitions
and are expected to ride
back on the bus so that they can complete
their committee
responsibilities upon return to school. If a parent
wishes to
take a child back with them, a note must be submitted to Mr.
Myers
prior to departure. Only a student's parent/guardian can
transport his/her own student.
Rehearsal schedule
post-season: Rehearsals are generally on Tuesdays
and
Thursdays from 3:15-5:00 in November and December. A full
schedule was distributed before registration. It is now available
on
the website. Please be sure to put all dates on your
personal
calendar. As always, attendance is expected at all
rehearsals and
performances.
Schedule Change
: Please note that the Raleigh Christmas parade is
now on November 21, not the date that was originally on the band
calendar.
This week: We will be changing the ending sets
of our show to make
them a little more “climactic.” We
will also be changing the
beginning of the show a bit, which will
affect the way we enter the
field. We will be adding a few
visuals, cleaning music in movements
1 and 3 primarily, and cleaning
some drill spots throughout the
show. Finally, we will
need to brush up on our pregame routine in
preparation for our home
game this Friday night! Have a good weekend
off.
Please read the attached short essay, “A View from the Field,”
by
Christina Hollenbeck. Christina’s Creative Writing
teacher asked
students to write essays for NPR's "This I Believe"
program on the
radio, and attached is her rough
draft.
