Subject: Broadcast for the week of September 6th

Dear band community  ,

I hope that everyone enjoyed the long weekend and that you are all rested and ready to come back to work.  We have two more short weeks left before our next performance, and we will need every minute of rehearsal in order to be sure that we are as prepared as possible for the 8th grade marching band night next Friday!  Our competition season is also fast approaching, and will be here (and over!) before you know it.

Wednesday's Study Hall  :    The following students have told me that they will be attending the study hall this Wednesday from 2:10-3:10 in the Commons.  Since this email is after the Monday deadline to submit names, please let Mr. Myers know if you plan to attend and your name is not on the list.  Please do not show up for study hall without checking in with Mr. Myers.
<< The names were removed from this document before posting it; see e-mail for details. >>

* = Every Wednesday unless I am told otherwise.

Wakefield Competition, October 3:  Please remember this is NOT our first competition on September 26; this is the schedule for Wakefield on October 3.  They just happened to release their schedule earlier than normal.  I expect to receive the Panther Creek schedule within the next week, and I will post it in the Broadcast as soon as I get the information.  The schedule below is tentative.

8:00  Rehearsal in Stadium
10:00  Load truck, dress into uniform, meet in band room (Students should NOT leave campus)
10:45  Depart GHHS
11:20  Move to stadium to watch Cary HS perform (in uniform)
11:45  Move to warm-up (snacks will be available)
1:00  Prelims Performance
*After our performance, we will dress and get lunch, either on campus or at a local fast food restaurant.
5:00  Prelim awards

*If we make it into Finals, the finals performances will begin at 8:00pm.  Our schedule for the rest of the evening will depend on our placement in the schedule.  If we do not make it into finals, we will still stay to watch the finals performances.

10:30  Finals Awards
~12:30  Return to GHHS, unload truck

Competitions:  Students may take the SAT on October 10 (West Johnston competition).  We had originally scheduled an overnight competition that weekend but changed it when the SAT dates were released.

Please be sure that you have reserved the entire day on your personal calendar for competitions.  Don't assume that we will report after a certain time, or that we will dismiss by a certain time.  Often, we are not given the schedule for competitions until within two weeks before the competition.  I will distribute the competition schedule as soon as possible, but often it is not until the Broadcast on the Sunday before a Saturday competition.  Thank you for your understanding of this matter.  Competition days will begin with a rehearsal before going to the competition site.  Please be aware that we will practice at GHHS on September 26 before the Panther Creek competition, then we will dismiss in time for students to grab food and get ready, and then we will meet at Panther Creek HS.  Buses will transport the entire band to other competition sites.

Bus Policy:  Students are required to ride the bus to competitions and are expected to ride back on the bus so that they can complete their committee responsibilities upon return to school.  If a parent wishes to take a child back with them, a note must be submitted to Mr. Myers prior to departure.  Only a student's parent/guardian can transport his/her own student.

As a reminder, the competitions are on September 26 (Panther Creek), October 3 (Wakefield), October 10 (West Johnston), October 24 (Sanderson), and October 31 (Havelock).

Rehearsal schedule post-season:  Rehearsals are generally on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15-5:00 in November and December.  A full schedule was distributed before registration.  It will be available on the website soon.  Please be sure to put all dates on your personal calendar.  As always, attendance is expected at all rehearsals and performances.

Schedule Change  :    Please note that the Raleigh Christmas parade is now on November 21, not the date that was originally on the band calendar.

This week  :    We will be cleaning movements 2 and 4 drill primarily this week, as well as working on the music for the end of movement 1 and all of movements 3 and 4.  Please be sure you are prepared for rehearsal by practicing your parts.  Don't forget to check off C-D in movement 3 with Mr. Myers if you haven't already done so.

Once again, take the time to review your music for dynamics and articulations and practice the correct musical markings.  We will start being picky with cleaning the music on the field this week.  Please remember to bring your dot books and music to all practices!

Check this out on YouTube:  A montage of awesome DCI Drill--if we could only clean our dots as precisely as these guys do!

WATER BOTTLES AT PRACTICE
Please be sure to bring a water bottle to every after school practice.
We can not afford to give students multiple cups every day.  A 32 oz.
wide mouth Nalgene bottle is perfect.  It can fit in your band bag and
be filled at the water fountain BEFORE you come out to practice.
Some people are sharing their water bottle with others.  This is NOT a
good idea with this Flu season upon us.  Just listen to the news and the
numbers of college students spreading the N1H1 virus among each other.
Let’s keep the band healthy by keeping your germs to yourself and washing
your hands often.
CHAPERONES NEEDED
Chaperones are still needed for the October 3rd, October 10th, and October 31st competitions.
Please let Carolyn Bishop know if you can help at any of these events.
